The CHM 15K laser ceilometer measures highly resolved laser backscatter data from atmospheric aerosols or droplets using LIDAR. From the measured data aerosol height profiles, cloud base heights, penetration depths, mixing layer height, vertical visibility and cloud amount are determined. Within its operating range of up to 15 kilometers (50,000 feet), it reliably detect multiple cloud layers and cirrus clouds.
